Get Mower For Your Money With This Buyers Guide

Not all lawn mowers are created equal.

“With all of the choices available it can be difficult to cut through the clutter and find the best mower for your lawn,” says Scott Ride, president of Husqvarna Canada, a leader in outdoor power products. “With a few simple tips you'll know exactly what to look for when choosing a new mower.”

These are at the top of his list:

Size matters: The type of mower you need is directly related to the size of your yard.

• Small - A manual mower is a great choice; it's also free from emissions and saves your neighbours from noise.

• Medium-Large - A propelled mower is your best option to help get the job done quickly.

• Large – Extra Large - If you're cutting area is larger than 1/3 hectares (¾ of an acre) look into ride-on varieties that will make the big job more manageable.

Push or propel: Push mowers are an affordable and reliable option for flat, medium-sized yards; but best for those in good physical shape. A propelled mower is best suited for a larger space because little elbow grease is required.

Terrain: If your yard is filled with hills and uneven terrain you may want to consider an all-wheel drive mower, like Husqvarna's popular model the HU800AWD. These mowers provide users with balance and power to all four wheels in hilly, uneven terrain and other tough mowing conditions.

Type of grass: If your lawn consists of taller, wilder, coarser grass, explore mowers with a rear or side ejection to help tackle your turf.

Bag or mulch: If you love a tidy lawn, or have springtime allergies, a lawnmower with a collection system is ideal. Scott Ride recommends the BioClip (mulching) method if you demand first-rate results and if you mow often. The finely-chopped grass cuttings fertilise the lawn and make it more drought resistant.
